ABSTRACT

Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS) is a fast, multiparametric, environmentally friendly, low-cost, and highly accurate technology for the analysis of components in food, soil, and agriculture. The purpose of this study was to generate NIRS calibration models for the prediction of nutrients in plant tissue of sugarcane to panela production cultivated in the Hoya del Río Suárez region. A total of 416 tissue samples were scanned in Vis-NIR spectral segment. Chemometric analysis was performed with the WinISI V4.10 software applying modified partial least squares regression with cross-validation. Four models with different mathematical treatments were evaluated, and the performance of calibrations was made through external validation analyzing the goodness-of-fit measures as prediction determination coefficient, standard error of the bias-adjusted prediction, and residual predictive deviation. The results showed that the calibration model for N had the highest predictive power. For macronutrients, the calibrations with the best predictive power were for P and K, and micronutrients for B, while Cu presented the lowest predictive power. Adequate models were found for the prediction of N, Ca, and P. In the case of the other nutrients, it is recommended to expand the calibration set.

ABSTRACT

Sugarcane is a crop of great importance for human consumption, either for the production of sucrose or for the production of ethanol fuel. The objective of this work was to evaluate the phytotoxicity caused by the herbicides, the agronomic components in two sugarcane cultivars, at five evaluation times, during the 12-month and 18-month cultivation periods. The experimental design was randomized blocks with four replicates, in a 10 x 2 factorial scheme, with nine herbicides (tembotrione, mesotrione, clomazone, saflufenacil, 2,4 dichlorophenoxyacetic, fluroxypyr + picloram, metribuzin, isoxaflutole, sulfentrazone), two sugarcane cultivars (RB006995 and RB036153), and five evaluation times (7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days after application DAA). The most phytotoxic herbicides for the 12-month cultivation period in the cultivars RB036153 and RB006995 were clomazone and sulfentrazone. For 18-month cultivation period, the herbicides isoxaflutole, clomazone and sulfentrazone were the most phytotoxic, mainly for the cultivar RB006995. For most herbicides, phytotoxicity decreased along the days after application. The most selective herbicides for both cultivars and cultivation periods were tembotrione, mesotrione and fluroxypyr + picloram.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT In order to compare soil losses in two cutting systems traditionally used in the cultivation of sugar cane for the production of panela, a study was carried out in which measurements were made in the field using a rainfall simulator and runoff plots in a vertisol of the municipality of Quebradanegra, Cundinamarca, where both types of cut are presented simultaneously: the cut-off system, in which everything is harvested at once having a homogeneous maturity in the crop and the thinning cut system, in which have an inhomogeneous maturity so that only a percentage of the plants is cut at the same time. To estimate the potential soil losses associated with both cutting systems, the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was used to obtain a mean C factor associated with the type of cut, using the data determined in the field and the erosivity of simulated rainfall intensities. Finally, the anual potential losses of soil was determined under the two cutting systems, where it was observed that the cut-off system has an annual potential erosion 2.2 times greater than the thinning cuy system. On the other hand, when comparing the potential losses of soil with a newly prepared and planted lot, without plant cover, the capacity of the sugarcane cane crop is demonstrated to offer a protection to the soil, presenting a potential erosion 9 times smaller, in the case of the cut-off system, with respect to a soil condition without plant cover.

ABSTRACT

The sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr., 1794) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is one of the main pests of sugarcane. This pest can reduce the quality and yield of the crop. Information on the quality and yield of cultivars in relation to the attack of sugarcane borer are necessary, since they guide the choice of the best materials for use in joint with other management tactics. Two field experiments were conducted in 2011 and 2012 to compare the quality and yield of 16 commercial sugarcane cultivars (IACSP93-3046, IACSP94-2094, IACSP94-2101, IAC91-1099, IACSP95-5000, IAC87-3396, RB92579, RB867515, RB966928, CTC2, CTC4, CTC9, CTC11, CTC15, CTC18 and SP86-0042) relative to the natural infestation of D. saccharalis. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications. There was no difference between treatments for infestation index, with averages of 1.2 to 8.7% of bored internodes. Higher percentages of internodes with red rot were observed for CTC9, CTC2 and RB966928. The cultivars CTC4 and RB92579 infested with D. saccharalis resulted in lower technological quality, due the reduction in the contents of brix, apparent sucrose content (POL) and purity; and increase of the reducing sugars and, consequently, lower theoretically recoverable sugar (TRS). On the other hand, the lowest yields (t of cane ha-1) were observed for CTC18, IACSP94-2094, IACSP94-2101 and RB966928. Therefore, according to the hierarchical cluster analysis (UPGMA), the cultivars RB867515, CTC11, IAC91-1099, CTC15, SP86-0042, CTC2 and IACSP94-3046 were resistant to D. saccharalis.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Although there are evidences that the proper supply of mineral nutrients to plants relieves water stress, little is known on the approach of how the drought affects the absorption and accumulation of nutrients by distinct sugar cane genotypes, or in different parts of a same plant. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the content and accumulation of N, P and K in the aerial part of plant from three genotypes of sugar cane, submitted to three water potentials in the soil, and check the relationship of these variables with the tolerance of plants to prolonged drought. In order to access this objective, an experiment under greenhouse conditions, comprised by a fatorial 3 × 3, in a randomized block design, and four replicates was carried out. After 90 days from treatment imposition, the plant transpiration rate, plant dry mass, concentration of N, P and K were determined in leaves and culms, as well as in total plant shoot were measured. It was found that tolerance to drought in sugar cane is related to higher levels of N and K in the leaves and stems, and larger accumulations of K and P in the plant shoot. There is high positive correlations among accumulation of N, P and K in the plant shoot and dry matter production by plants submitted to drought. There are intermediate correlations among plant transpiration and nutrient uptake by plants under drought. Plants of the genotype SP81-3250 are more tolerante to prolonged drought, than the RB855453 and IACSP95-5000 plants.

ABSTRACT

In the area of expansion, where if you have restriction on fertility, soil preparation has contributed considerably to the improvement of the physical, chemical and water conditions of soils and, consequently, to the proper development of culture of sugarcane. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different management techniques on the availability of nutrients in soil in an area of expansion of sugarcane, formerly with Brachiaria decumbens, in the Cerrado region. The experiment was conducted using the CTC 2 variety at Jalles Machado mill in Goianésia, GO. The experiment was established in a randomized block design, with six treatments and four replications. Chemical attributes of soil were evaluated at depths of 0-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm. Significant differences were found among depths for all analyzed attributes. Adopted management systems influenced chemical attributes and the availability of nutrients for plants. Invertion of soil through plowing and harrowing is extremely beneficial to carry out soil amendment in the first year of cultivation, improving the incorporation and effectiveness of the corrective. The adoption of no-tillage system did not prove to be the best option for the first year of sugarcane cultivation, hindering the incorporation of the corrective.

ABSTRACT

Phosphorus (P) is an important macronutrient for plant development. The distribution of its forms in the soil depends on geochemical, biological and anthropogenic processes. The characterization of these compartments favors the understanding of this nutrient cycle. The objective of this work was to evaluate the total P contents and organic P fractions of Red Latosol samples in areas with different management systems in the State of Goiás, Brazil. The study was conducted in sugarcane areas in which the sugarcane harvest was performed with previous straw burning for 1 (CN1), 5 (CN5), 10 (CN10) and 20 (CN20) years, plus an area with native vegetation (NV) of the Cerrado biome, and an area with pasture (PA). Quantification of P fractions was performed by extraction with NaHCO3, H2SO4 and NaOH. The CN20 area had the highest total P values up to 0.40 m deep compared with the others, while the CN5 area had values in the layer 0.40-0.60 m similar to those found for CN20. Regarding the inorganic labile P fraction, the largest contents were also found in the area CN20 up to 0.30 m deep. The P fraction extracted by NaOH had the highest proportions among the systems evaluated, although this fraction is considered little labile, it is quite dynamical in tropical soils.

A caracterização desses compartimentos favorece o entendimento do ciclo desse nutriente.

ABSTRACT

Present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of aqueous methanolic extract from Saccharum officinarum on the sporulation and morphology of oocysts of four Eimeria species (Eimeria tenella, E. necatrix, E. mitis, E. brunetti) of poultry. Sporulation inhibition bioassay was used to evaluate the activity of Saccharum officinarum extract (SOE) on the sporulation of coccidian oocysts. In this assay, unsporulated oocysts were exposed to six concentrations of S. officinarum in 10 percent dimethyl sulfoxide solution (w/v; 10, 5, 2.5, 1.25, 0.625 and 0.31 percent) while DMSO and potassium dichromate solution (K2Cr2O7) served as control groups. The Petri dishes were partially covered to allow the passage of oxygen and incubated at 25-29° C for 48 h, providing 60-80 percent humidity. The sporulation of the oocyst was confirmed by examining sporocysts under inverted microscope at 40x. Results showed anticoccidial activity of SOE against all Eimeria species as proved by its ability to inhibit the sporulation of the oocysts under laboratory conditions. Inhibition of sporulation was observed in dose dependent manner. S. officinarum extract at higher dose also damaged the normal morphology and shape of oocysts of Eimeria species.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) production is influenced by various abiotic stresses, including salt stress. Salinity can induce oxidative stress, which in turn damages biomolecules and cellular structures. However, such damage can be avoided or minimized by the enzymatic and non-enzymatic defense systems of plants. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of exogenous proline on Na+ and K+ content and on the activity of catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and peroxidase in two sugarcane genotypes (RB931011 and RB872552) grown in vitro under salt stress. The plants were grown for 20 days with or without 100 mM NaCl and exposed to 20 mM proline for varying period of time. The data were subjected to ANOVA factorial (two genotypes and five treatments), and the mean values were compared by Tukey test at a 5 % probability. Under salinity stress, both genotypes exhibited membrane integrity reduction, reduced total soluble protein content and unaltered or increased endogenous proline content. Exogenous proline reduced Na+ accumulation in a manner proportional to the exposition period at the amino acid. In both genotypes, antioxidant enzymes activity increased with the addition of NaCl. In conclusion, RB931011 genotype showed higher proline accumulation and increased in activity of the antioxidant enzymes, indicating better salt stress tolerance than in RB872552 genotype.

ABSTRACT

This experiment was designed to evaluate the effects of the inclusion of detoxified castor bean meal (CM) content on the chemical-bromatological composition, as well as the fermentation characteristics and dry matter losses of sugarcane silage. The treatments consisted of four levels (0, 7, 14 and 21% natural matter) of addition of castor bean meal. The design was completely randomized, with five replicates. The material was ensiled in PVC silos of 50-cm in height and 10-cm in diameter, which were opened after 60 days. The density of fodder maintained in the silos was equal to 750kg of natural matter/m3. In order to quantify the gas and effluent losses, the silos were weighed at the beginning and at the end of the experiment. The addition of castor bean meal has increased the levels of DM and crude protein and reduced the levels of neutral detergent fiber, N-NH3, ethanol, and gas and effluent losses from silages, but did not affect pH values. During ensiling, alcoholic fermentation was controlled with the inclusion of the additive.

ABSTRACT

In Brazil Phakopsora pachyrhizi and Puccinia kuehnii are important pathogens of soybeans and sugar cane, respectively. In vitro experiments were carried out in order to evaluate P. pachyrhizi and P. kuehnii urediniospore germination under different adjuvants used in fungicide sprays to control rust diseases. Petri dishes (80 mm diameter) containing 10 mL of agar-water (1.7%) were used. In each plate 1 mL of a spore suspension with 5x105 urediniospores and 1 mL solution of adjuvants with twice the concentratation for field sprays was added. Assist(r), Veget Oil(r), Natur Oil(r), Break Thru(r)Aureo(r), Silwet(r) and Nimbus(r) were evaluated. There was a control check treatment with water. P. pachyrhizi urediniospore germination was negatively affected by all adjuvants after 2 hours of exposition. Urediniospores of the Asian soybean rust exposed to Assist(r), Break Thru(r), Aureo(r) and Nimbus(r) had lower germination rates. Germination of P. kuehnii urediniospores was lower in all adjuvant treatments after 4 hours of exposition. At 8 hours of Veget Oil(r) and Break Thru(r) exposure urediniospores of the orange rust pathogen had 96.6 and 94.8% reduction in germination compared to control check treatment.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to clone and characterize a full length cDNA of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (SoPAL). Differential tissue expression pattern of the SoPAL transcript and its enzyme activity was also analyzed during the tillering stage of growth. The full-length of SoPAL cDNA was 2118 bp long and contained a protein with 706 amino acids, determined by encoding technique. The amino acid sequence and phylogenic analysis of the cloned SoPAL showed high similarity to PAL from other monocotyledonous such as sorghum (96%), maize (93%) and Bamboos (87.12%). The highest levels of SoPAL transcript were observed in the root and stem, while its minimal gene expression levels were in the leaves and sheath, respectively. The highest level of SoPAL enzyme activity was in the leaves. These results helped to understanding the characteristics of PAL biosynthesis and its regulation at the molecular level in sugarcane. This information could be critical for the manipulation of phenylpropanoid biosynthesis in the plant using biotechnological processes.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of herbicides used in their recommended doses, on the activity of the microbiota and sugar cane growth. For this, seven herbicides (tembotrione, MSMA, hexazinone + diuron, sulfentrazone, trifloxysulfuron-sodiun, and tebuthiuron cloamzone) were applied in pots containing 12 dm3 substrate (soil + fertilizer) at 50 days after sugarcane planting. The effects of these products on the evolution of soil CO2 (CO2-C), in the microbial biomass carbon (MBC), metabolic quotient (qCO2), enzyme activity in the rhizosphere acid phosphomonoesterase in rhizosphere soil samples collected at 44 days after herbicide application (DAT) and the growth effects at 77 DAT. Initially herbicides MSMA, clomazone, sulfentrazone and trifloxysulfuron-sodium caused poisoning in culture. However, only plants treated with trifloxysulfuron-sodium, these symptoms remained visible at harvest of the experiment. The effects of herbicides on microbial activity rizoferica of sugar cane, sulfentrazone and tebuthiuron reduced CO2-C and MSMA herbicide clomazone and reduced the CBM soil. The herbicide clomazone was that caused the greatest impact on microbial activity because of the increased value qCO2. Moreover, the sulfentrazone reduced values of that variable, contributing to the balance of microflora in the soil. No influence of herbicides on the activity of acid phosphomonoesterase rhizospheric on the sugarcane soil.

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this study were to determinate the phyllochron, allometric relationships between leaf growth and development, and crop yield of three sugarcane clones in plant and first year ratooning crop in subtropical environment. A two-year field experiment was conducted at the experimental area of Santa Maria, RS, during 2008-2010. Three sugarcane clones were used: IAC 822045 (early), SP 711406 (medium) and CB 4176 (late). Experimental design was a complete randomized block with four replications. Phyllochron (°C day leaf-1) was calculated considering leaf number (LN) lower than 15 (PHYLearly), greater than 15 leaves (PHYLlate) and for the entire LN (PHYLentire). A power-type nonlinear model was fit for cumulative leaf area (LA) versus LN. Phyllochron varied during the development cycle of sugarcane increasing in the sequence PHYLearly>PHYLentire>PHYLlate. The phyllochron of plant crop is lower than phyllochron of ratoon crop for the first 15 leaves. The power model is appropriate to characterize the allometric relationship between the evolution of accumulated green area as a function of accumulated main stem leaf number. The medium clone has a higher productivity in the ratoon crop.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this work was to induce direct somatic embryogenesis from segments of immature leaves of the RB872552 variety of sugarcane and to correlate this morphogenic event with oxidative stress. Two previously described protocols were utilized for the induction of somatic embryogenesis in sugarcane with different supplementations of the culture medium and different incubation conditions. For the conversion of embryos into plants was used MS medium without phytoregulators. Histological analyses and activity of antioxidant enzymes were also conducted for the embryogenic and non-embryogenic tissues. The formation of somatic embryos was obtained in 81 % of the explants with the combination of regulators 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid)and BAP (6-benzylaminopurine) when incubated under 16 h photoperiod. With regards to the antioxidant enzymes, there was increased activity of peroxidase and an increase in the soluble protein content in embryogenic tissues, whereas lower activities of polyphenol oxidase and catalase appeared in these tissues compared to nonembryogenic tissues. It could be inferred that oxidative stress plays an important role in the induction of somatic embryogenesis in sugarcane.

ABSTRACT

Crop productivity and sustainability have often been related to soil organic matter and soil microbial biomass, especially because of their role in soil nutrient cycling. This study aimed at measuring fungal and bacterial biomass by epifluorescence microscopy and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) spore density in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) fields under different managements. We collected soil samples of sugarcane fields managed with or without burning, with or without mechanized harvest, with or without application of vinasse and from nearby riparian native forest. The soil samples were collected at 10cm depth and storage at 4°C until analysis. Fungal biomass varied from 25 to 37µg C g-1 dry soil and bacterial from 178 to 263µg C g-1 dry soil. The average fungal/bacterial ratio of fields was 0.14. The AMF spore density varied from 9 to 13 spores g-1 dry soil. The different sugarcane managements did not affect AMF spore density. In general, there were no significant changes of microbial biomass with crop management and riparian forest. However, the sum of fungal and bacterial biomass measured by epifluorescence microscopy (i.e. 208-301µg C g-1 dry soil) was very close to values of total soil microbial biomass observed in other studies with traditional techniques (e.g. fumigation-extraction). Therefore, determination of fungal/bacterial ratios by epifluorescence microscopy, associated with other parameters, appears to be a promising methodology to understand microbial functionality and nutrient cycling under different soil and crop managements.
